Guidelines Issued on Transportation for Aging

From Eldercare, a report from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) are jointly developing a coordination resource, the Transportation Coordination Toolkit, to assist states and communities in their efforts to improve access to transportation services for persons with special mobility needs.

NHTSA Older Drivers Program

(NHTSA) web site provides information and resources for older drivers and their families and physicians. Through research and outreach activities, NHTSA's programs help aging individuals recognize their changing abilities and adapt their transportation practices appropriately. Links are provided to brochures, fact sheets, research studies, and reports to Congress addressing a wide range of topics, including assessing and counseling older drivers; safe driving for drivers with arthritis, Parkinson's disease, sleep apnea, diabetes, cataracts, glaucoma, or macular degeneration, and those who have had seizures or a stroke; pedestrian safety; and transportation needs of older women.
